war of resistance against Japanese aggression but are now trying to manipulate history in their favor, several U.S. experts said Thursday.

The issue was raised at a conference titled “Anniversary Politics: Commemorations of WWII in the Asia Pacific in 2015,” held at George Washington University in the U.S. capital.

Robert Sutter, a professor of Practice of International Affairs at the university, said mainstream opinion in the KMT is that the war of resistance against Japanese aggression should be commemorated and World War II veterans should be honored.

While the Republic of China was the mainstay in the war of resistance, Beijing is trying to draw the KMT over to its side and manipulate history, Sutter said.

Over the past three years, Beijing has been exerting strong pressure on Japan and hopes that Taiwan would adopt the same stance, he said. Taiwan, however, pays high attention to its relations to Japan and the United States, which makes the situation very complicated and affects domestic politics, he added.     [FULL  STORY]
